Two quick reviews

I know, I know with having to get work done I should have never bought a book. But I did and I didn't expect to like it so much. My first review is of "Son of a Witch" it's by the same author of "Wicked", which I also loved. I really wasn't expecting to like it but really did. So much so I had problems putting it down even when I had things I really needed to get done. But alas that is how I roll. It basically picks up from when the wicked witch of the west dies. The main character may or may not be the witches son. It is so good, I highly recommend it. I won't give anything away but if you liked "Wicked", the book not the musical because they are drastically different one is good the other is not, then get this and read it. I did buy two books that day and I am resisting the urge to read it until band camp next week.

My other review is of "The Dark Knight" holy batshit Batman. This was so freaking good, I can't stand it. Yes the draw back for me was that it was so obviously Chicago it made it hard to think "Gotham". But at the same time it took a lot of the mythos away and almost made it plausible. Which I have to say I love about the movie. Yes the action scenes where pretty out there but not inconceivable that anything like that could happen but it did ground it a bit more for me. The other thing, and I loved this in the first one was the acting was so good. Top to bottom was so great. They are all fantastic actors so how could you go wrong, but they blew away any expectations. Heath Leger is the Joker as far as I am concerned that is the best portrayal. So twisted and sadistic and yet held that level of humor we love in the character. It was so hard to sit there and think "Yea that's Heath Leger." I am telling you even in the split second he was shown without the make up I still wasn't convinced it was him. Christian Bale again my favorite Batman to date, not enough shirtless scenes but I digress. Michael Caine brilliant. Gary Oldman great actor and seriously I almost cried when they said he was dead, but so happy when he wasn't. Aaron Eckhart loved it I am loving this guy more and more with every movie I see of his. Maggie Gyllenhaal loves me some Maggie, no offense to Katie who was stupid not to take this role again, but Maggie did an outstanding job and yes I was so sad to lose her in the movie. Morgan Freeman aside from the Joker I think this was my favorite character. Morgan Freeman really grew into this roll for this installment and I can't wait to see him in the next one.

So there it is so freaking cool. Comics to movies though I love them and will always see them because I am big and nerdy like that, always fall short for me. But this and "Batman Begins" have shown me it can be done.

two things

First and most important, The Simpsons movie comes out today. Guess where I am going to be tonight? Now I know I am most likely going to be disappointed with the movie but I have to go. I have been a fan of them ever since they were on the Tracy Ulman show. God it has been a long time I believe I was in the 7^th grade when they first made their way onto the small screen. Now they are on the big screen. Yea!!!!!!!!!!!

The other thing I have to mention today is the strangest thing at the gym. So this guy, probably 70 something man came in and was wearing a powder blue suit jacket and dress pants. At first I thought oh he is checking out the gym or on his way to change. No he sat right down at a machine and started working out. Of course he took his straw hat off first luckily his toupee didn't come with it. Now an older person is not a strange thing at the Y but to be so dressed up to do so was. To make it a little funnier when he left, he actually had toilet paper trailing on the heel of his shoe. Now I am not sure where he got it from since he never made it to the restroom during his 10 minute workout. So I wonder how long that had been with him. Poor guy.

I really have to ask myself, how does one get toilet paper stuck to your shoe? I mean I know how it could but really how?

Netflix

As many of you know I don't have cable and while I don't watch much tv but I do enjoy throwing in a DVD and watching a movie from time to time. Ok like all the time. So I have been using netflix to pick up movies or tv shows I haven't seen but had a mild interest. Or in some cases a morbid curiousity. So I have a very long list and some are good and quite a few have been bad but hey it was cheaper than seeing them in the movie theater. The last two movies I recieved I have very mixed feelings about. The first was "Heavenly Creatures" It was a Peter Jackson (of Lord of the Rings) film and Kate Wisletts first film role. If I liked girls I would totally be in love with Kate. The roles she picks have been great and she has done a fantastic job every single time. This was no exception and the fact she was probably 17 or 18 at the time she had great maturity in her acting for her age. The film was superb however the story was based on a true story and it was fucked up.

The next film was "Wit". Oh my god I love Emma Thompson. She is yet another actress I would love to be friends with. Actually just be around. I have a feeling she would make me feel stupid all the time but I love those types of people. This movie was incrediblly moving and painful at the end. Also in it was Audra McDonald who is one of the most gifted voices of our generation. It was really funny 'cause I didn't figure out that is who she was till the fianl credits rolled but during the film they played a piece by Henryk Gorecki that she had sung on a recording I own. I even said out loud to myself "That's Gorecki and it's Audra McDonald singing" I am such a dork but hey if you are reading this you knew that. Anyway great film highly recommend but not if you are already depressed just gonna make it worse.

And for full disclosure the last movie I saw off netflix was "Ultimate Avengers 2". Yes a cartoon about Marvel superheros. Huge nerd. But I believe in a well rounded education.

So much to write about.

I am a bit behind on writing and I have so much to write about. This is the first weekend out of 3 that I have remained home. Two weeks ago I was in Chicago for Pride. Yea lots to talk about there. Last weekend I went to Iowa to visit Jamie. This weekend Jamie is here to visit. But before I ever dive into any of those things I must say.

Oh Holy Jesus, what the fuck happened in the 3rd installment of Spiderman. Yes dispite warnings from friends not to go see it I went anyway. I am a nerd and not seeing it wasn't really an option for me. But now I wish I hadn't. It was awful. I don't exagerate here. I mean really bad. The first hour or so was actually ok. It had promise though they kept bringing in storyline after storyline. I mean really there were 4 movies in that one. and with 45 minutes left I think they thought oh shit we have to tie these together and finish this movie. And what was up with Harry's butler was this really Marvels answer for Alfred. Move over Sir Michael Cain this guy may beat you out for an oscar. I mean really WTF. I really enjoyed the first two and was really looking forward to Venom because really that is one of my favorite parts of spiderman.

Oh and Stan Lee I know you created Spiderman and all but really just stay in a non talking roll.

Two notes on what I did enjoy. The return of goofy nieve Harry, James Franco is much cuter when he doesn't have that evil look or was that constipation I am not really sure. And Bruce Campbell, I love this actor but I swear he either has something on Sam Rahmi or he is sleeping with him because Bruce is in everything that man does and almost nothing else.
